ADHD Testing for Accurate Diagnosis

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is most commonly diagnosed during childhood, but for some, ADHD can begin or continue into adulthood. The biggest indicator of ADHD in both children and adults is a tendency to have trouble concentrating or paying attention.

In addition to difficulty focusing, individuals with ADHD may also be hyperactive and, in some cases, have trouble controlling their impulses. These symptoms can increase problems such as disorganization, low self-esteem, addiction, poor time management, and difficulty holding down a job, which can be damaging to a person’s motivation to pursue their goals and highest potential.

ADHD Testing for Adults and Adolescents

Doctors across the United States use a variety of tools to diagnose ADHD, operating within diagnostic guidelines outlined in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Many healthcare providers also use FDA-approved testing for ADHD in children and adults. At Serenity Mental Health Centers, we use a testing tool called the the QbTest, which can be used to diagnose children, adolescents, and adults, as well as help determine severity of ADHD in diagnosed patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a QbTest?

The QbTest is a computer-based test that evaluates attention ability and movement based on an infrared measurement system. Test results are compiled into a report and compared with results from similar patients, allowing your doctor to comprehensively visualize your ADHD symptoms and severity.

How does a QbTest work?

The patient takes the test at a computer which uses an infrared camera. The patient wears a headband with an infrared marker attached to it, and holds a responder button. During the test, different symbols are shown on the computer screen.

The objective of the test is to push the responder button when a certain symbol appears on the screen. The test usually takes 15 minutes to complete.

How is a QbTest used?

The QbTest provides objective data that, when compared with information gathered from people in a similar demographic, helps your clinician assess you for ADHD.

After taking your QbTest, the information gathered can also provide a valuable baseline measurement to evaluate future changes in your activity, attention, and impulsivity.

What Do the Results of a QbTest look like?

The report below shows the results from a seven-year-old boy with ADHD. The two graphs in the upper part of the report show activity level. The third graph shows attention and impulsivity control. The green circles represent his correct answers and the red squares represent incorrect answers. The vertical position of the symbols indicates the reaction time.

At the bottom of this graph, the results of the QbTest are summarized with a number. The “percentile” column indicates where the results of this test fall compared to others. A physician uses this data to determine an ADHD diagnosis and design a care plan.

At Serenity Mental Health Centers, our goal is to provide patients with an individualized approach to treatment. The QbTest is a valuable tool to diagnose ADHD and provides useful data that allows our providers to create the most effective treatment plan for the patient’s individual symptoms and needs.
