State-of-the-Art Treatment Options
What Is TMS?
TMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation, is an FDA-approved, drug-free alternative for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). TMS has a very high success rate and is well tolerated with very few side effects. Many of our patients are safely going off their medications because their TMS treatment was so effective.
Serenity offers BrainsWay Deep TMS, the most advanced type of TMS technology that reaches broader and deeper areas of the brain to achieve better results. Research has proven TMS as an effective option for treatment-resistant conditions and is covered by most insurance for patients with major depression and OCD who have tried multiple medications and failed to achieve satisfactory results for their depression and OCD symptoms.
In clinical trials, one in three people achieved full remission from depression with just one course of TMS. In real-world clinical settings, efficacy rates are even more promising with 50% of patients achieving remission from major depression after one course of TMS and 75% with significant improvement, as reported by BrainsWay, the makers of Deep TMS.
A course of TMS treatment consists of five sessions per week for about four weeks, then the treatment sessions taper off to a schedule best suited for each patient’s needs. There is no down time with TMS, and it is performed as an outpatient treatment, right in our Gilbert psychiatry office. A typical TMS treatment session only lasts for about 20–30 minutes.
After the session, patients can immediately return to regular daily activities. Most patients notice results towards the end of their course of treatments, and some begin to feel improvements earlier, within the first two weeks.
TMS is covered by most insurance plans for those who have tried multiple medications without success. To find out if you qualify for TMS therapy, give our Gilbert psychiatry office a call at . Our Patient Care Coordinators will give you a free consultation to learn more about this exciting treatment option and get all your questions answered. When you’re ready to get started, they’ll help you make an appointment for a full assessment and consultation with a psychiatrist in our Gilbert, AZ office.
What Is Ketamine?
Another option for treatment-resistant depression, as well as other difficult-to-treat conditions, is ketamine. Ketamine has been traditionally used surgical anesthetic and is generally a very safe drug. However, ketamine is research-backed as a proven treatment with very short acting results for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Ketamine is becoming well known as an effective off-label treatment for mental conditions like depression and anxiety.
According to research studies, 60-70% of patients responded to ketamine with significant improvement, and many report feeling relief from symptoms within hours after completing a ketamine infusion session.
We administer ketamine infusions at our offices through an IV and is a very safe procedure and closely monitored by our doctors and registered nurses to ensure comfort and safety. A ketamine infusion appointment lasts approximately two hours.
Patients should never drive or operate heavy machinery after a session as ketamine can cause some disorientation, so we ask patients to bring a friend or family member for transportation to and from their ketamine appointments. Serenity staff is also available and happy to assist in setting up an Uber or Lyft ride service for patients if needed.
In addition to TMS and ketamine, the psychiatrists at Serenity Mental Health Centers prescribe various medications to treat certain conditions. The method of treatment they recommend is based on a variety of factors that are all unique to each patient. We also perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations as well as ADHD testing to support our patients with an accurate diagnosis and an individualized care plan.
Here at Serenity, we believe that every patient has different needs and requires a highly individualized care plan to achieve success. Our doctors and support staff will take the time needed to listen and understand your concerns and challenges, and help you consider all your options. You and your psychiatrist will work as a team to find the right treatment plan that works best for you.
You will have a dedicated care team to work closely with you throughout treatment, continuously evaluating and monitoring your progress, and make adjustments where needed to maximize your results.
WE MAKE SCHEDULING CONVENIENT
